Why Choosing the Right Snooker Cue Matters

Your cue is the most important piece of equipment in snooker. A cue that feels comfortable and balanced allows you to deliver accurate shots with confidence.

Good cues offer a smooth stroke and clear feedback when striking the cue ball. This helps players control spin, speed, and positioning more effectively.

Professional snooker cues are designed to deliver consistency and precision throughout every frame.

Snooker Cue Weight and Balance

Most snooker cues weigh between 17oz and 21oz. The right weight depends on personal preference and playing style.

  • Lighter cues allow more finesse and touch on delicate shots although also a quicker delivery speed
  • Medium weight cues offer a balanced feel and are popular with many players and our reccomendation.
  • Slightly heavier cues can provide stability on long straight shots.

Balance is equally important. A well balanced cue helps players maintain a smooth and controlled stroke. You can find our video on Cue Balance on our Cue Creator Website.

Snooker Cue Tip Size

Snooker cues use smaller tips than pool cues. Most snooker cues feature tip sizes between 9.25mm and 10mm.

The smaller tip allows greater precision when striking the cue ball. This helps players control spin and deliver accurate positional shots. The smaller tip size also creates some issues with aiming so you need to be a better cueist and findding the centre of the ball or intended line of aim. Most Professional players are 9.4-9.7mm and the ones that are smaller is due to the amount of tips they have had changed but end up modifying the cue back each few years.

Maintaining your cue tip with quality chalk and proper shaping is essential for consistent performance.

Types of Snooker Cues

Snooker cues come in several designs. Each type offers different advantages depending on how the cue will be used.

Three quarter jointed cues are widely used by competitive players because they combine portability with excellent playing feel.

High Quality Materials

Most professional snooker cues use straight grained ash for the shaft. Ash offers strength, durability, and excellent feedback during play. The other option is of course Maple which has no marking or grain which some people prefer less distractions as well.

The cue butt may include decorative woods and splices which add both beauty and balance to the cue.

Carefully selected materials help ensure that each cue performs consistently and lasts for many years. You can design your own cue with all speciifcations at Cue Creator or pick from our stock also on World Cue Sports.

Snooker Cues and UK Pool Cues – Precision, Balance, and Control

A good snooker or english pool cue is the foundation of a strong game. The right cue provides balance, accuracy, and consistent cue ball control. Whether you are playing league matches, practising at home, or competing in tournaments, a quality snooker cue can make a huge difference to your performance.

At World Cue Sports we offer a wide range of professional cues designed for players of all skill levels. From beginner cues to premium handcrafted models, our range includes cues built for precision, durability, and smooth cue ball contact.

Choosing the Right Cue

Every player has a slightly different preference when it comes to cue feel and balance. The most important factors when choosing a cue include weight, tip size, and cue construction.

  • Cue Weight – Most cues weigh between 17oz and 20oz. Lighter cues offer more finesse while slightly heavier cues provide stability. In writing that in Australia due to the speed of our cloth in Snooker we would reccomend cues of 18 ounces + until max 19 ounces unless you prefer heavier. In UK Pool or Aussie pool the most popular weights as 17-17.5 ounces.
  • Tip Size – Snooker cues usually use a 9.25mm to 10mm tip, which allows greater precision on delicate shots and for UK Pool or Aussie Pool 8-8.5mm although many better players use 9mm which can be custom ordered.
  • Cue Length – Standard cues are around 58 inches long, but extensions are available for longer reach for Snooker and for UK Pool or Aussie pool cues of 55 inches and 57 inches are the majority. This is due to not needing to strech like you do in snooker. This also depends on your height, stance and arms as well so if unsure give us a call.

Choosing a cue that feels comfortable in your bridge hand and delivers a smooth stroke is key to improving your consistency.

Types of Snooker or Pool Cues

Snooker and Pool cues are available in several designs depending on how they are used and transported.

  • One Piece Snooker Cues – Often used in clubs and snooker halls.
  • Three Quarter Jointed Cues – Very popular for players who want easy transport and extension options.
  • Half Jointed Cues – Break down into two equal pieces for travel.

Three quarter jointed cues are one of the most popular choices because they provide excellent balance while still being easy to transport.

Premium Cue Brands

World Cue Sports stocks cues from some of the most trusted cue makers in the industry. These cues are designed using high quality ash shafts, carefully selected woods, and precise craftsmanship.

How to Control Cue Ball Spin – Training Guide for Better Position Play

Your Simple Guide

Great players control the cue ball. They do not just pot balls. They move the cue ball to the next position with precision.

Cue ball spin is the key to this control. Learning how spin works will help you play better position shots and build longer runs.

This guide explains the main types of spin and how to practise them.

Why Cue Ball Control Is Important

In snooker and pool, every shot sets up the next shot. Good players think ahead and move the cue ball to the best position on the table.

Without cue ball control, even easy pots can leave difficult next shots.

Spin allows players to control the cue ball after contact. This includes forward movement, backward movement, and side angles.

The Three Main Types of Cue Ball Spin

Follow (Top Spin)

Follow spin is created by striking the cue ball above the centre.

This causes the cue ball to continue moving forward after hitting the object ball. Follow shots are useful for moving the cue ball up the table.

Draw (Back Spin)

Draw spin is created by striking the cue ball below centre.

This causes the cue ball to spin backwards and return towards the player after contact. Draw shots are essential for position play.

Side Spin (English)

Side spin is created by striking the cue ball to the left or right of centre.

This spin changes the angle of the cue ball after hitting rails or object balls. It is useful for controlling angles and navigating the table.

How Chalk Helps Create Spin

Chalk increases friction between the cue tip and cue ball. Without chalk, the cue tip can slip off the ball and cause a miscue.

Good chalk allows players to apply spin safely and consistently.

Premium chalk also produces less dust and spreads evenly across the cue tip.

View Pool Cue Chalk

Why Cue Tips Matter

The cue tip is the only part of the cue that touches the ball. Tip quality affects how well spin transfers to the cue ball.

Soft and medium tips generally hold chalk better and allow more spin.

Explore Cue Tips

Training Tools That Improve Cue Ball Control

Some equipment is designed specifically to help players learn spin.

  • Training cue balls with visible spin markings
  • Practice drills using target zones
  • Video training and slow motion shot analysis

Training cue balls help players see how the cue ball rotates after each shot.

View Spin Training Cue Ball

Simple Practice Drill for Cue Ball Control

Place an object ball near the centre pocket and the cue ball a short distance away.

Pot the ball using follow, draw, and stun shots. Focus on where the cue ball stops after contact.

This drill helps players understand how spin affects cue ball movement.

Improve Your Game

Controlling the cue ball is one of the most important skills in snooker and pool. With practice and the right equipment, players can develop better position play and stronger break-building ability.

Best Pool Chalk in Australia – Complete Guide to Premium Cue Chalk

Best Snooker or Pool Chalk in Australia – Complete Guide

Snooker and Pool chalk is one of the smallest pieces of equipment in cue sports, yet it has a huge impact on performance. The right chalk improves cue tip grip, helps apply spin, and reduces miscues.

In this guide we look at some of the best pool chalk brands available in Australia and explain how each type can improve your game.

Why Snooker or Pool Chalk Matters

When the cue tip strikes the cue ball, friction is needed to control spin and prevent miscues. Chalk increases that friction and allows players to apply side spin, draw, and follow shots with confidence.

High quality chalk also produces less dust, keeps tables cleaner, and spreads evenly across the cue tip.

At World Cue Sports we stock many of the most trusted chalk brands used by players around the world. We purchase either directly or through trusted wholesalers that we know are Authentic.

Taom Premium Chalk

Taom chalk is famous for its extremely low dust formula and smooth application. It is widely used by professional players and is known for keeping pool tables and cue balls cleaner.

Kamui Pool Chalk

Kamui chalk is designed for maximum grip and spin control. It is engineered using advanced materials and is popular with players who want strong cue ball control more in Pool than Snooker.

Navigator Pool Chalk

Navigator chalk offers smooth tip coverage and consistent performance. It provides reliable grip while producing minimal residue on the table cloth.

Choosing the Right Chalk

Different players prefer different chalk characteristics. Some prefer low dust formulas that keep tables clean, while others prefer chalk designed for maximum grip.

Key factors to consider include:

  • Grip and friction on the cue tip
  • Dust and residue levels
  • Consistency of application
  • Compatibility with modern cloth

Find the Best Chalk for Your Game

The best chalk for you depends on your playing style and table conditions. Premium chalks such as Taom, Kamui, and Navigator all offer excellent performance for modern snooker and pool players.

Dafabet Masters 2015 Ronnie O’Sullivan

Dafabet Masters 2015 Ronnie O'Sullivan

Dafabet Masters 2015 Ronnie O’Sullivan equalled Hendry’s Century record?

Ronnie O’Sullivan fluked ( or what I call the Dimitri a player I play with flukes a lot.) the final yellow in the tenth frame, and added the green, brown and blue to match Hendry’s record with a 116. Ronnie will now meet Marco Fu on Thursday afternoon with the chance to set a new record.

Over a 23-year career, O’Sullivan has established himself as the most gifted player ever to hold a cue and the greatest ever break-builder. He is now setting his sites on another Hendry record: six Masters titles. He’ll equal that if he triumphs at Alexandra Palace on Sunday night.

At the Start today They frames got messy and O’Sullivan led 2-1 after an hour’s play. He then stepped up a gear with breaks of 77, 91 and 100 to lead 5-1.

Walden, made a run of 100 to win frame seven and Ronnie looked set for victory when he made a 66 in the next, but Walden got a snooker and free ball on the last red and cleared up to a 5-3 score. Ricky  cleared with 73 in the next, an unlikely fight-back was in full flow.

But O’Sullivan responded by getting the frame and century he needed. In potting the black off the last red he failed to dislodge the yellow and brown from the baulk cushion, but a hit-and-hope yellow came off three cushions and dropped into a centre pocket, leaving him perfect position on the green. O’Sullivan went on to make 116 as a packed house of nearly 1,700 joined him in celebration.

Quotes from Ronnie

“I’ve been thinking about the (centuries) record since I got within striking distance and I’m glad I’ve equalled it now,” said O’Sullivan.

“I doubt Stephen Hendry is that bothered, he’s still got the seven world titles record which means more to him than anything. For me it’s more about winning this tournament now.

UK Snooker Ronnie O’Sullivan Wins

The Ronnie O'Sullivan Show November 2015

UK Snooker Ronnie O’Sullivan Wins 10-9

Ronnie O’Sullivan withstood an epic Judd Trump comeback to claim a fifth UK Snooker Championship title with a 10-9 victory.

In the UK Snooker Ronnie O’Sullivan led from the start of the match and went 5-1 ahead in the first session, before Trump pulled two frames back to stay within touching distance.

Ronnie then saw his lead evaporate from 9-4  in front to a superb revival saw Trump emerge from the brink, making breaks of 120 and 127 to level the contest at 9-9.

But Trump fouled from a snooker in the last allowing O’Sullivan to triumph.

Like all finals they say that was the best and it looks like this will be said again. It was very good to watch to see if Ronnie could win the

Last and he controlled  the break very well from not playing for five frames.

O’Sullivan To Meet Bingham UK Snooker

ronnie o'sullivan-uk-snooker

Ronnie O’Sullivan is through to the semi-finals of the Coral UK Championship for the first time in five years, following a hard-earned 6-4 win over Anthony McGill.

By Mark Rawlinson- world snooker

O’Sullivan, bidding for back-to-back titles having won the Champion of Champions last month, will now meet Stuart Bingham in Saturday’s semis. The Rocket didn’t reach the heights of last night’s maximum break, but he did enough to stay on course for the £150,000 top prize.

Young Scot McGill beat four-time World Champion John Higgins on Wednesday and put O’Sullivan on the back foot early on, as he won the first two frames. He made runs of 31 and 35 to clinch the opener before a break of 55 in the second put him 2-0 ahead. O’Sullivan managed to level proceedings at the interval, with a break of 98 in the fourth before taking the lead for the first time, thanks to a 125 in the fifth.

The next two were shared to leave the Rocket 4-3 ahead but McGill then missed a guilt-edged chance to level the scores. He hit the final green too thick, leaving it over the pocket which allowed O’Sullivan to go 5-3 up. McGill responded well with a great run of 103 in frame nine but O’Sullivan only needed one chance to clinch frame ten, as he coolly slotted in a 97 break and with it the match.

“It was a tough game,” said O’Sullivan, who celebrates his 39th birthday today. “He got off to a good start and I managed to peg him back. He’s missed a couple of game balls there and I feel like he was the better player today even though I scored a few big breaks. I felt like he was more ready to win that match than me – I think it was just experience that got me through.

“I felt like there were so many close frames that could’ve gone either way. My type of game is to dominate and win frames in one visit and I just felt that I wasn’t allowed to do that. He kept me in my place a lot of the time so it was important for me to win that last frame in one visit.”What a great player and character Anthony is. He’s a fantastic ambassador for snooker. He’s my type of character, he loves the game and he’s a really lovely boy – I’m a fan!

“I’d definitely share anything that he needed – if I could help him I would. He’s going to be around for a long time anyway whether he picks my brains or not. I think it’s just a matter of time with Anthony before he starts winning tournaments.”

O’Sullivan will face Bingham for a second year in a row in York, as the Essex-man pulled off a great comeback from 5-3 down to beat Graeme Dott 6-5.Dott, who beat defending champion Neil Robertson in the last round to get to this stage, knocked in two runs of 68 and a 92 on his way to going 4-1 up.

Bingham closed to 4-3, with a 108 break in in frame seven but breaks of 54 and 65 put Scotland’s Dott one frame away from victory. However Shanghai Masters champion Bingham won the next two to force the decider which he won in style, with a 103 century break.

Bingham beat O’Sullivan at the quarter-final stage here last year and hopes for a repeat result.

“I just hung in there really,” said world number nine Bingham. “At 4-1 down I thought it was just going to be one of those days. Anything that could go wrong was going wrong and it just wasn’t happening. I managed to pinch one to 4-2 and I thought it’s still not over.

“I sat in my chair at 5-5 and I thought how am I level? I felt good but just a bit spaced out today – I don’t know why.

“Apart from one match, I’ve been on the table next to Ronnie in every game and he seems to be missing a few early doors. You’ve got to punish him. I’ve got to produce a bit better to have any chance against him.”
